Keeping mechanical rooms safe

It's always a good time to conduct a mechanical room safety check and review potential liability problems. The following checklist highlights important items to look for:

•  Ensure that exhaust outlets are located at least 20 feet from inlet vents.

•  All purges should vent outdoors, not indoors.

•  Make sure chiller drain valves are locked off.

•  Isolate the mechanical room by ensuring a tight seal around the main door, including a working lock.

•  Store the self-contained breathing apparatus outside the mechanical room, not inside.

•  Clear any low areas in the room floor of unwanted chemical residues that may be present.

•  Make sure floor drains aren't connected to drains from occupied space such as restrooms.
