Determining the value of subcooling

Sufficient subcooling of the condensed refrigerant is necessary to keep vapor from feeding the metering device. Vapor present in the liquid line will reduce capacity. The steps to determining the value of subcooling are:

•  Take the pressure of the high side.

•  Refer to a temperature/pressure chart and locate the corresponding temperature.

•  Take a temperature reading at the outlet of the condenser coil.

•  Subtract the reading from the conversion temperature.

•  The result is the degrees of subcooling.

When in doubt, call the manufacturer or wholesaler.
