Following is a technician's checklist for properly installing a motor:
Inspect Before Installation
Ensure that the motor was not damaged in shipment.
Check nameplate for proper frequency, voltage, horsepower, RPM, and rotation.
Safety Precautions
Disconnect power source.
Install all wiring, fusing and grounding in accordance with codes.
Keep all parts of your body and loose clothing away from moving parts.
Be careful when touching a motor operating at or above its normal temperature. It will be hot.
Cover or guard all moving parts.
Installation
Make sure airflow around motor is not restricted.
Fasten motor securely to its mounting.
Make sure shaft-connected devices are securely attached.
Check for proper alignment of couplings.
Check connection diagram to ensure proper voltage and rotation connections.
Make sure motor is properly grounded.
Insulate all connections
Startup
Replace terminal box cover.
Check direction of rotation.
Check operation of motor to be sure it comes up to speed, runs smoothly and that the current draw does not exceed the nameplate rating.
Shut off power immediately if a problem exists and determine the source of the trouble before restarting
Maintenance
Clean motor and surroundings to ensure proper ventilation.
Re-lubricate sleeve bearings as recommended.
Check electrical, mechanical connections for tightness.
