Purpose:
- Minimizes the amount of oil circulated through the system
- Excessive oil circulation causes reduced system capacity by reducing heat transfer with-in the evaporator coil
- Especially important if the oil is not MISCIBLE (does not mix well) with the refrigerant used
Example:
- R-717 (ammonia)
- R- 22 Low temperature applications
Types:
- Impingement (screen)
- Chiller (water coil)
Installation:
- Discharge line of system
- Return line back to crankcase (with shut off valve)
- Separator should be insulated
