Liquid Line Design and Installation

  • common goal, limit liquid pressure drop to 2 F (equivalent pressure drop)

Goals

  • Ensure Flash Gas is not created by excessive drops

  • Results of flash gas are:

    • Reduced Capacity

    • Noisy Metering Device

    • Pitting of the metering device

    • Unstable metering device operation

    • Possible flooding

  • Run lines as direct as possible

  • No traps required

  • Ensure pressure drop of 2 F (equivalent pressure drop) is not exceeded

  • Avoid excessive heat gains

  • Avoid liquid Hammering (keep liquid velocity below 360 Fpm)

Oil Equalization on Multi Compressor installations Methods

  • Oil separator with oil reservoir and float switch

  • Oil equalization lines:

    • One line above oil level

    • One line below oil level

    FOLLOW CODE REQUIREMENTS


Examples of Liquid Line Pressure Drops:

  • Add 0.5 PSI for every 1 ft. drop

  • Subtract 0.5 PSI for every 1 ft. up

  • Add 1 PSI of bends and turns
