Evaporators

Shell and Tube Evaporator Types

  • Dry
  • Flooded

Dry

  • Location of primary refrigerant = tube side

  • Location of secondary refrigerant = shell side

  • Purpose of baffle (full or half) is to provide maximum exposure of secondary refrigerant to primary refrigerant circuit

Flooded

  • Location of primary refrigerant = shell side

  • Location of secondary refrigerant = tube side. Tube bundle in bottom of the shell in liquid refrigerant

  • Purpose of eliminators to prevent liquid from returning to the compressor

Capacity or Efficiently Control

  • constant water flow at all times

Temperatures

  • Low temp Application 2 degrees F TD (Secondary Refrigerant Entering/leaving)

  • High Temperature Applications 10 to 15 F TD (secondary Ref. Entering /leaving)

  • Air conditioning chilled water supply at 40 to 45 F

  • Air conditioning supply air temp. 55 F

Secondary refrigerant Controlled by Entering Condition

  • When evacuating system of primary ref.

  • Must circulate secondary pump for secondary ref or it will freeze the whole system
