Compressors

Terminology

Flooding – liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor during the running cycle

Slugging – extreme flood back of liquid Ref. of oil, off cycle migration of liquid Ref.

Migration – off-cycle refrigerant gas returning to a cold compressor crankcase. Gas condenses in the oil

Liquid dilution – crankcase has a mixture of liquid refrigerant and oil. Liquid ref. sinks to the bottom the oil floats to top

Specific Volume – Cubic ft/lb (space 1lb of a gas occupies at a certain temp. and pressure) increases in pressure decrease in Specific Volume

Mass Flow Rate – flow in lb/min

Volumetric Flow Rate – determined by the compressors type and design (constant)

Positive Displacement – a compressor that delivers a constant volume of gas under a constant speed
