Terms Relating to Magnetism

Magnetism:

    • Magnetism is the ability to attract materials such as iron and steel.
    • These are called magnetic material.
    • Magnetism is a force that can act at a distance without contact, much li gravity
    • This type of force is referred to as a field

Magnet:

    • A magnet has a property of magnetism
    • Its two opposite end or sides are called North and South Poles
    • When two magnets are brought close to each other, like poles repel each other, and unlike poles attract each other with a magnetic force
    • A permanent magnet from external magnetic forces

Magnetic Field:

    • A magnetic field is the area around a magnet in which magnetic force is present

Magnetic Materials:

    • Magnetic materials are attracted or repelled by a magnet and can be magnetized themselves

Ferromagnetic Material:

    • Is a name given to any material that behaves like iron in a magnetic field

Electro Magnetism:

    • Is magnetism that is caused by toe flow of an electric current.
    • This type pf magnetism diminishes when the current flow stops

Lines of Force:

    • This magnetic field is made up of lines of force.
    • These lines of force or also referred to as magnetic flux

Flux density:

    • The stronger the magnetic force, the more lines of force per given area
    • The Flux density of the magnetic field is a measure of the number of lines of force per unit area

Magnetic Screens:

    • Magnetic line of force will pass through anything
    • Therefore, you cannot block them
    • Instead you create devises that deflect the lines of force, causing them to pass around objects.
    • These deflecting devices are referred to as magnetic screens, or shields

Residual Magnetism:

  • The ability of a material to hold a magnetic field

Residual Magnetism:

  • The ability of a material to hold a magnetic field

    Flux: Magnetic Lines of Force
    Flux will flow through anything
Soft Iron is a good flux conductor
