Magnetism by Induction

Soft iron, it is easily magnetized due to low reluctance
It has low residual magnetism

Hard Iron or Steel with high carbon content requires a much stronger magnetic field to become magnetized (higher reluctance), when the magnet is removed, it will retain most of the magnetism (high residual magnetism)
