Magnet types
Natural magnet:
- Loadstone also know as Magnetite
- Forms a permanent magnet
Artificial Magnet:
- Iron, nickel, and cobalt
- Manmade, don’t require current to maintain a magnetic field
- Made of hard brittle alloys
- High residual magnetism
- Require a large magnetic force to become magnetized
- Form a type of magnet
Electromagnets:
- Manmade
- Magnetism depends on current flow
- When current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is formed around the conductor
- If the conductor is cooled, the magnetic field will be more concentrated
- Wind the coil around a soft iron core, the magnetism will increase
- The magnet will become more powerful, called an electromagnet
- Soft iron is easily magnetized but has low residual magnetism
- Electromagnets are non permanent magnets
