Magnet Types

Magnet types

Natural magnet:

    • Loadstone also know as Magnetite
    • Forms  a permanent magnet

Artificial Magnet:

    • Iron, nickel, and cobalt
    • Manmade, don’t require current to maintain a magnetic field
    • Made of hard brittle alloys
    • High residual magnetism
    • Require a large magnetic force to become magnetized
    • Form a type of magnet

Electromagnets:

    • Manmade
    • Magnetism depends on current flow
    • When current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is formed around the conductor
    • If the conductor is cooled, the magnetic field will be more concentrated
    • Wind the coil around a soft iron core, the magnetism will increase
    • The magnet will become more powerful, called an electromagnet
    • Soft iron is easily magnetized but has low residual magnetism
    • Electromagnets are non permanent magnets
