Alternating Current Formulas

Alternating Current Formulas

    • Conversion of different values of AC

    • RMS = PEAK x 0.707

    • PEAK = RMS x 1.414

    • AVE. = PEAK x 0.637

Find the following

RMS = 120 V………..169.8V PEAK

PEAK= 339.36………240V effective (RMS)

RMS = 120V…………339.6V PEAK to PEAK

AVG. = 187.28V……..294V PEAK

Frequency Formula

F = NP / 120

F = Frequency in Hz
N = speed in RPM
P = # of poles in the alternator
120 = # of alternations per cycle x seconds in a minute (2 x 60)

Answer the following:

At what speed must four pole generator rotate to develop a frequency of 50 Hz?
F = NP/120
50 = Nx4/120
N= 50 x 120/ 4
N= 1500 RPM

Out of Phase…….when the voltage wave and current wave reach peak values, and 0 values at a different point in time

Phase Angle……..the difference in degrees between one phase, or value and another
